What to do right now
Get everyone inside. People and pets should move indoors, away from windows and doors near the activity.
Stay calm and move slowly. Swatting and fast movement trigger defensive behavior. If bees start following you, walk (don’t run) toward shelter, a house or car…and keep going. They can outpace you, so distance and a closed door are your goal.
Close up the house. Shut doors, windows, and, if bees are entering a wall, interior doors to the affected room.
What NOT to do
Don’t spray the swarm or hive. Store-bought spray rarely reaches the queen deep in a wall, and it can enrage the colony while leaving the honeycomb behind to rot and re-attract bees.
Don’t seal the entry hole. This is the most common and most damaging mistake. Trapping a colony inside a wall pushes them deeper into the structure, and desperate bees often chew their way toward light, sometimes straight into your living space. Always remove the hive first, then seal.
Don’t try to knock it down yourself. A ladder, a broom, and a defensive Arizona colony is exactly how people end up with dozens of stings.
